We all do it but simply put, it’s our way of sabotaging our efforts when it comes to exercise.

I know from experience, that when something big happens, like a health scare, or someone you are close to passing away, it can hit us sideways. It makes us take stock. But within a couple of years, sometimes months, we fall back into bad habits, or fall out of the habit of exercising. Thinking we have all the time in the world.

But we don’t.

And it’s not just about the big things; training for a marathon, dropping a dress size in weight… it’s actually about how we choose to spend our minutes, hours and days.

It’s the small, daily choices we make.

Of course, it’s not always easy to live in the present moment. We often get caught up in the past or the future.

So here’s a little reminder to stop procrastinating on the present.

Here are a few tips for valuing your time:

  • Set priorities. What’s most important to you? What do you value most? If it’s your health, is this currently a priority? Are you getting enough sleep, eating healthy, exercising regularly? Forget what’s important to your family, friends or anyone else and focus on you.
  • Learn to be intentional. How can you best spend your time to optimise your health? Can you fit in a 15 minute workout each day? If not, can you make choices about how you incorporate movement into your day (taking the stairs instead of the elevator).
  • Say no. Setting boundaries is so important. It’s okay to say no to commitments that aren’t a priority. Don’t be afraid to turn down things that will take up your time and energy.
  • Delegate. If you can, delegate tasks to others, or ask for help (this is not a weakness by the way!). This will free up your time so you can focus on the things that matter most.
  • Avoid distractions. When you have scheduled in a workout, try to avoid distractions. Turn off your phone, close your email, and find a quiet place to workout. Or go somewhere where you are not going to be interrupted.
